Lugol's Iodine was invented by the French scientist Jean Lugol in 1829. Lugol’s Iodine is an aqueous solution of potassium iodide and iodine. “Aqueous solution” simply means that water is the medium for the iodine. It contains three forms of iodine – molecular iodine, iodide, tri-iodide. The body will use different forms for different purposes.
Iodine displaces dangerous "halides" such as; fluoride, bromide and chlorine in the thyroid. It is antioxidant, promotes proper hormone balance, protects from radiation and kills bacteria and fungi.
It forms a part of the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) which are used in every cell of the body to regulate metabolism and weight by controlling the burning of fat for energy and heat. These hormones are directly responsible for controlling the body’s “base metabolic rate” which affects the efficiency and efficacy of many of the body’s organ systems, and regular processes including the absorption and biosynthesis of food into usable energy. Iodine is literally "food for the thyroid".
In addition, thyroid hormones are important for myelination – the formation of the myelin sheath around nerve fibre – of the central nervous system shortly after birth. Iodine is especially crucial to brain development in children. A deficiency during critical periods, such as during foetal development or early childhood, can have deleterious effects on cognition (possibly leading to a lower IQ). A cause and effect relationship has also been established between the intake of iodine and the normal growth of children and adolescents.
Common Iodine deficiency symptoms include:
- Brain Fog
- Mood Disorders, Anxiety and Depression
- Memory Impairment
- Inability to Regulate Body Temperature
- Persistent Swelling and Soreness in the Neck and Throat
- Sore Muscles
- Uterine Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts
- Fibrocystic Breast Disease
- Problems with the Prostate
- Fluctuations in Heart Rate
- Autoimmune Conditions
- Unexplained Weight Loss/Gain
- Hair Loss
- Dry Skin (particularly the elbows)
There is no “one size fits all” dosage. It is best to start slowly as taking large doses of Iodine can cause rapid detoxification, which in turn can cause detox side effects. This is because Iodine rapidly removes heavy metals and toxins from the body. 1 – 2 drops in a glass of pure water (free from chlorine and fluoride – not from the tap!), three to four times a week is recommended as a starting dose.
When the body is deficient in one nutrient, it is not uncommon for it to be deficient in others. When taking Lugol’s Iodine it is important that “companion nutrients” are also available to the body because iodine works together with these nutrients.
Companion Nutrients for Lugol’s Iodine
- Vitamin C
- B Vitamins
- the normal growth of children
- normal cognitive function
- normal energy-yielding metabolism
- the normal function of the nervous system
- the maintenance of normal skin
- the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function
